Arms and the Pilot

Newsmax yesterday cited a Washington Times piece from Tuesday, which reported that the Obama administration “recently diverted $2 million from a program to train and certify pilots to carry firearms safely while on duty.  Instead, it is using the money to hire additional field inspectors to help discipline pilots who step out of line…”  Both TWT and Newsmax not unnaturally interpreted this measure as a change of policy on the arming of commercial pilots.  The TWT piece cited information from pilots on this topic, who would only provide it anonymously for fear of retribution.

Today Newsmax provides an update, in which TSA spokeswoman Sterling Payne called the story inaccurate.  In her words:  “This program continues to grow. TSA continues to recruit and put new FFDOs on planes, and we continue to train them and do recurring training.”  The airline pilots’ union made a similar statement, asserting that “TSA embraces the FFDO program, that there are no plans to reduce or restrict its growth, and that in fact the agency fully intends to grow and expand the program.” Continue reading “Slim Pickin’s 19 March 2009”
