  1. Ms. Dyer,
I just finished your article and I think there may be one factual discrepancy?
I believe that the Navy said there was a carrier stationed within a few hundred miles of the Libyan coast at the time of the Benghazi incident? Yes I know that US Air Force planes could have been across the Med from Italy in short order, but if true, the US Navy could have been there in minutes.

Again, I am NOT positive about the Carrier’s presence, but I’m almost certain I heard a US Navy report that said such a group was close at hand.

  2. Welcome, Scott — your comments will post automatically from now on. Thanks for the question.

There was no carrier off the coast of Libya at the time of the Benghazi attack. The closest carrier was over in CENTCOM. I wrote a post earlier this year discussing the map of Navy ships that made the rounds a number of times after September 2012:

Many sources of reporting confirm where the carriers were: USS Enterprise was in the Gulf of Aden, and USS Dwight D Eisenhower was in the Strait of Hormuz. The other “big deck” ship in the region capable of carrying jet aircraft was USS Iwo Jima, the amphibious assault ship, which can carry Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers. It was in the Arabian Gulf. None of the ships was close enough to respond with aircraft between 9:40 PM and 11:30 PM on 9-11-12.
