The trapped contractors have been under fire; at latest report, about 100 are left at the Iraqi base.  No U.S. forces are involved in rescuing them.  New post up at Liberty Unyielding.  Enjoy!

  1. This is a very disturbing report. I hope you will follow up on it.

Regardless of the present whereabouts of any Americans or allied employees who until recently may have been working at Balad, the readiness status of such American forces as would be in a position to come to their aid, as stated in your report, is not good. You fear for their safety. What you say causes me to do so as well. And at the very least, this inspires little confidence in these arrangements.

Pending further news, let us hope for the best, and not that these contract employees are presently defending Balad and being told:

    “Hold, until relieved”.

On the broader subject, I have been urging in letters now for almost a year that this F-16 program be accelerated, so that Iraq would be capable of defending its air space, and thus have no excuse for allowing Iranian overflights to Syria. Clearly now, these planes have not arrived soon enough, and thus the program has failed.

I suggest we find some uniformed Iraqi fighter pilots, and planes for them to fly, and station them at Incerlik.

I will now scour the web for news on this subject. Thank you.
