You have to read the stories of Patrick Frey (“Patterico”), Aaron Walker (Aaron “Worthing”), and Robert Stacy McCain to believe them. There isn’t a lot more for me to say here – read the details at the links down below – but it’s “Everybody Blog Day,” and I’m an Everybody (if a latecomer. Long day spent mostly away from the computer).
What all these people have in common is that they are bloggers who have been threatened, harassed, sued, and/or possibly “SWATed” (more on that in a minute) by convicted Indiana “Speedway Bomber,” drug dealer, forger, and perjurer Brett Kimberlin – and his associates.
Kimberlin – once briefly famous for claiming to have dealt drugs to Dan Quayle (a charge his biographer never found evidence for) – now operates the leftist non-profits Velvet Revolution and Justice Through Music, which have received over $100K from the Tides Foundation, Teresa Heinz-Kerry, and Barbra Streisand, among other prominent donors.
Aaron Walker, an attorney and avocational blogger, was harassed, sued, and framed on an assault charge by Kimberlin in Maryland. (The charge was thrown out by a judge when Kimberlin failed to offer any evidence for it.) Walker and his wife were both fired from the company they worked for, due to the company’s fear of reprisals from Kimberlin.
A party to Kimberlin’s harassment of the Walkers is Neal Rauhauser, a [former?] Daily Kos contributor (RedState reports on Friday that Daily Kos has scrubbed references to its association with him) often described as a “Democratic operative.” Blogger Stacy McCain has a video summarizing the work of Rauhauser’s Progressive PST – which reportedly has consulted for Democratic candidates – in smearing the Tea Party.
Speaking of Stacy McCain, after he was warned that Kimberlin “knew where he lived,” he moved out of his Maryland home with his wife a few days ago, and is currently blogging from an “undisclosed location.”
If the latter seems drastic, consider the incredible case of Los Angeles attorney and off-hours blogger J. Patrick Frey – Patterico. He was bombarded by Kimberlin and his associates with threats, warnings, and other forms of harassment last year. The barrage culminated in a horrific “SWATing” episode in the midnight hour of 1 July 2011, when an unknown caller, impersonating Frey, made a false report to the Los Angeles police that “Frey” had just killed his wife. A SWAT team showed up at Frey’s door and did what SWAT teams do, dragging Frey from his home at gunpoint, ordering his wife to stand with her hands against the wall while they searched the premises, and trooping through the house to verify that the no-doubt-terrified children were alive and safe.
Frey probably speaks for all of us when he says he bears no malice toward the police. They got a dreadful report and had to act on it. Indeed, we can assuredly say that the discipline and professionalism of the SWAT team were key factors in the innocent Frey family’s survival of the event.
The LA authorities have dropped their investigation of the SWATing incident, and they never pursued the voice identification opportunities incident to the case. Frey got a court-qualified expert to evaluate the voice in the hoax call, and the expert tied the voice to the hoax caller in a virtually identical incident in New Jersey on 23 June 2011.
These are just some of the stories of right-wing bloggers harassed and threatened by left-wing extremists. I want to point out that the harassers are extremists, not average liberals, and the entire left wing of the political spectrum should not be tarred with their disgusting brush. As you will see, a few of the links in the growing avalanche of posts on this topic reference liberal bloggers who have been harassed by the same left-wing extremists.
Unfortunately, the tactics deployed by these extremists are operating inside law enforcement’s “OODA” loop right now. The record of prosecutors and the courts is spotty. I believe the authorities will do better getting in front of this eventually, but for the time being – as the Walker case demonstrates – devious tactics like Kimberlin’s end up putting the victim on the spot, making it seem as if he is a party to an unseemly feud. The law relies on the public not abusing it in Kimberlin’s egregious manner; it is caught flat-footed when a Kimberlin comes along.
Given the truly vicious tactics these people employ, I stand in awe of the many bloggers who stepped up to the plate on this earlier today. See the Michelle Malkin link for an extensive list. We’re walking in tall cotton here. I believe God cares what is being done to the bloggers who have fallen victim to the Kimberlin crowd – that He cares about America’s future – and that He loves and protects the truth.
